A quiet wellness retreat where riverside living, good food and unexpected activities come together

What if a wellness getaway did not involve spending the entire day in a treatment room?
That was one of the pleasant surprises of staying at THANN Wellness Destination in Ayutthaya. Set along the Noi River, the retreat feels far removed from the pace of Bangkok, yet it is close enough for a short escape. Here, wellness is less about following a strict programme and more about creating the space to slow down, eat well, move a little and simply enjoy where you are.

Founded in 2002, THANN is a Thai natural skincare and aromatherapy brand that has grown into an international name, with its products and spa services available in more than 20 countries. THANN Wellness Destination opened in Ayutthaya in 2019, bringing that philosophy into a full-scale retreat designed around holistic wellbeing.

The first thing that sets the property apart is its riverside setting. The Noi River runs quietly alongside the resort, creating a natural backdrop that immediately changes the pace of a stay. There is no need to fill every hour with sightseeing. In fact, some of the best moments come from doing very little.

But there are plenty of things to do if sitting still is not your idea of relaxation.
One of the most memorable was water cycling on the Noi River. It sounds simple enough, but once out on the water, the experience becomes surprisingly fun. Pedalling across the river with the greenery and quiet surroundings all around gives a genuine sense of freedom. It is the kind of activity that gets you moving without feeling like exercise, and it offers a completely different way to experience the landscape of Ayutthaya.

Another unexpected experience was Tea Yoga, an early morning yoga session with an unusual twist. Participants practise yoga while holding a cup of tea, attempting to keep it balanced throughout the movements. It sounds easy until you actually have to do it. Suddenly, every movement requires a little more concentration.

It is playful, slightly challenging and surprisingly calming at the same time. More importantly, it captures the relaxed approach to wellness here. You do not have to take wellness too seriously to enjoy it.
For guests looking for a deeper wellness programme, the resort has a 1,600-square-metre spa complex with 12 treatment rooms, including Aroma and Thai Massage rooms, an Aromatherapy Steam Room, three Aromatherapy Baths, a Salt Therapy Room, Sauna and Fitness Centre. There is also a Thai Medical Clinic offering treatments based on traditional Thai medicine.

Although the spa is clearly an important part of the resort, this particular stay was too short to experience the treatments. Instead, the time was spent exploring the other sides of the property, from the river to the dining room.
Accommodation follows the same understated approach.
The resort has six room categories, ranging from the Deluxe at THB 20,500 to larger pool villas, including a three-bedroom option at THB 115,000 for up to six guests. The rates remain the same throughout the year, regardless of weekday, weekend or season.

The stay was in a Suite, priced at THB 23,000. At 80 square metres, the Riverfront Suite feels more like a private apartment than a standard hotel room, with a separate living area, three-seater sofa, walk-in closet, large bathroom with both a walk-in shower and bathtub, and a spacious balcony overlooking the river.
The balcony, complete with a daybed, quickly became the obvious place to spend time between activities. There is something about having a river directly in front of you that makes checking your phone feel slightly less important.

The room also comes with a number of thoughtful details, including daily resort wear, a complimentary minibar with infused water, drip coffee, flower and herbal teas, snacks, THANN bath and facial amenities, an electric aroma diffuser and Bluetooth speaker.
Then there is the food.
Riverfront Restaurant serves an eclectic menu drawing techniques and flavours from Thai, Italian, Japanese and Chinese cuisines. The presentation follows the restaurant’s Art of Plate concept, while many ingredients are sourced from the resort’s own organic farm.

The farm grows vegetables, herbs, mushrooms and edible flowers, while also producing eggs. This farm-to-table approach is not only about freshness but also forms part of the property’s wider sustainability efforts.
The Afternoon Tea was one of the highlights of the stay. Priced at THB 1,000 per person, it is served by the river during the day, making it an easy way to spend a slow afternoon. The setting does much of the work: tea, small bites, a quiet river and nowhere that you particularly need to be.

Dinner takes a more substantial direction with a four-course Dinner Set priced at THB 1,800. The menu brings together different culinary influences without feeling overly formal, making it a satisfying way to end the day.
Lunch is also available as a three-course Lunch Set at THB 1,000.

Sustainability is another part of the resort’s identity. THANN Wellness Destination has operated without plastic water bottles, plastic straws and disposable F&B containers since opening. More than half of its employees come from Ayutthaya, while some ingredients are sourced from local farms and fishermen.
The property also operates a waste-sorting system, with food waste from the kitchen and restaurant turned into organic fertiliser for the in-house farm. It is a practical approach that connects the dining experience with the land around it.
After a stay here, the biggest takeaway is that wellness does not necessarily have to mean a packed schedule of massages, meditation and treatments.
At THANN Wellness Destination, the idea of wellbeing feels less like a programme and more like a change of pace. And for anyone looking for a short escape from Bangkok, that might be exactly the point.
