Chiang Mai Night Market Illuminates San Kamphaeng

with Spectacular Light Installation and Mapping Experience

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in collaboration with Chiang Mai Province, has officially launched the “Chiang Mai Night Market”, transforming the iconic San Kamphaeng Walking Street into a vibrant nighttime destination filled with light, art, culture, and digital creativity. The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Siwakhon Buapong, Vice Governor of Chiang Mai, and Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, at Khuang San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai.

Designed to showcase the charm of Chiang Mai after dark, the Chiang Mai Night Market invites visitors to explore a reimagined walking street enhanced by grand Light Installation and Mapping displays, live music performances, and immersive cultural activities. The event takes place every Saturday at San Kamphaeng Walking Street from 17 January to 28 February 2026, creating a new landmark for nighttime tourism in Northern Thailand.

Elevating Chiang Mai as a City of Festivals and Creative Living

According to Mr. Siwakhon Buapong, the Chiang Mai Night Market plays a vital role in strengthening the province’s tourism ecosystem by transforming local cultural capital and traditional craftsmanship into contemporary creative experiences. By integrating art, lighting, and digital technology, the event delivers a dynamic nighttime atmosphere aligned with Chiang Mai’s long-term vision as a City of Wellness, City of Living, and City of Festivals.

The initiative also reflects the national tourism strategy under the concept “Value is the New Volume” and Chiang Mai’s policy of “12 Months, 12 Festivals – Travel Chiang Mai All Year Round”, aimed at enhancing destination image, increasing tourism revenue, and ensuring sustainable income distribution within local communities.

Creative Walking Street: From Local Market to International Stage

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT, emphasized that event-driven tourism is a key strategy in stimulating travel demand. The Chiang Mai Night Market is organized across two major locations: San Kamphaeng Walking Street (Saturdays) and Tha Phae Walking Street (Sundays), supporting Thailand’s goal of upgrading walking streets from local markets into international Creative Walking Streets.

San Kamphaeng is widely recognized as a cultural hub of Lanna heritage, renowned for its handicrafts, traditional wisdom, and preserved community lifestyle. The event is curated under the theme “San Kamphaeng Remix: Chiang Mai Remake”, presenting a refreshed identity of the area through creative lighting, digital art, and storytelling installations while maintaining deep respect for local identity and traditions.
