Why Bangkok Leads Asia’s Lunar New Year Travel

Agoda’s latest data reveals how Bangkok balances heritage, modern experiences, and shifting travel behavior during the Lunar New Year

As the Lunar New Year approaches, travel trends across Asia reveal more than just where people go—they highlight how travelers choose destinations that offer meaning, atmosphere, and cultural connection. According to Agoda’s accommodation search data, Bangkok ranks among the top three destinations in Asia for Lunar New Year celebrations, placing second for international travelers while remaining the number one choice for domestic visitors.

Bangkok’s strength lies in its ability to turn tradition into experience. During the festive season, Chinatown becomes the heart of celebration, with Yaowarat Road illuminated by red lanterns, lion dances filling the streets, and night markets buzzing late into the evening. Temples such as Wat Mangkon Kamalawat draw both locals and visitors seeking blessings, reinforcing Bangkok’s role as a city where cultural rituals and urban energy coexist naturally.

Agoda’s data also points to shifting patterns within Thailand. While Bangkok and Phuket continue to dominate inbound travel, Pattaya’s rise to third place signals growing demand for destinations that combine festive traditions with leisure-focused escapes. Phuket’s appeal remains rooted in its blend of Sino-Portuguese heritage and island experiences, while Pattaya reflects a broader trend toward coastal cities that offer both celebration and entertainment.

Inbound Lunar New Year travel to Thailand is led by visitors from mainland China, followed by Malaysia and South Korea. Notably, Thailand has emerged as the top outbound destination for travelers from mainland China during the festive period, overtaking Japan. This shift highlights Thailand’s renewed momentum as a preferred regional destination for Lunar New Year travel.

Domestic travel patterns tell a similar story of balance. Bangkok continues to lead, while Chiang Mai moves into second place, reflecting strong interest in its cooler climate and culturally rooted celebrations. Dragon parades at Tha Phae Gate, festive activity around Warorot Market, and performances at Pung Thao Kong Shrine position Chiang Mai as a destination where Lunar New Year feels intimate and heritage-driven.

For Thai travelers heading abroad, Tokyo remains the top choice, followed by Osaka and Taipei, which enters the top three this year. Taipei’s rise points to growing interest in short-haul cultural destinations, where travelers can combine temple visits at Longshan Temple with modern city experiences. Across Asia, Japanese cities continue to perform strongly, with Tokyo leading overall Lunar New Year travel preferences.

In the Year of the Horse, a symbol of energy and movement, these trends reflect a broader desire for exploration and renewal. Bangkok’s continued ranking among Asia’s most sought-after Lunar New Year destinations underscores its unique market positioning—a city that offers depth without complexity, tradition without rigidity, and celebration that feels both authentic and accessible.
